Introduction:

“Stay Away, Joe” is a song by Elvis Presley, recorded on October 1, 1967, at RCA’s Studio B in Nashville. Written by Ben Weisman and Sid Wayne, it was recorded as part of the soundtrack for the 1968 MGM film Stay Away, Joe. The movie is a light-hearted comedy where Elvis plays Joe Lightcloud, a Native American rodeo rider who returns to his family’s ranch. Directed by Peter Tewksbury, the film was based on the novel by Dan Cushman and featured a strong ensemble cast, including Burgess Meredith and Joan Blondell.

Musically, the recording features some of Nashville’s top session players, including Scotty Moore and Chip Young on guitar, Bob Moore on bass, D.J. Fontana and Buddy Harman on drums, and Floyd Cramer on piano. Vocals were supported by The Jordanaires, a staple in many of Elvis’s recordings. The soundtrack captures Elvis’s typical blend of country and rock, though the song itself leans more into the upbeat country style.

While the film and song did not become major highlights in Elvis’s career, they remain part of his extensive body of work during the 1960s, a period where he focused heavily on movie soundtracks. “Stay Away, Joe” was later released as part of the Let’s Be Friends album in 1970.

Lyrics:

“Stay Away, Joe”

Ho jump down, spin around, let’s have a party
Look who’s back, Stay Away Joe
Chock taw, chick a Shaw, gonna drink me hearty
Welcome back, Stay Away JoeStay Away Joe they call me
Stay Away Joe, oh yeah
But if you need me call me
Hoop and a holler and I’ll be there
Ho

Who keeps turnin’ up like a bad penny
Take one guess, Stay Away Joe
Always findin’ trouble a-plenty
Oh my yes, I reckon you know

Stay Away Joe they call me
Stay Away Joe, oh yeah
But if you need me call me
Hoop and a holler and I’ll be there
Ho

When two lips are right for the pickin’
Who crops up, Stay Away Joe
I love them and leave them screamin’ ‘n kickin’
Giddy up look at him look at him go

Stay Away Joe they call me
Stay Away Joe, oh yeah
But if you need me call me
Hoop and a holler and I’ll be there
Hey
