Introduction:

Elvis Presley recorded “Shake, Rattle and Roll” on January 30, 1956, during sessions at RCA Studios in New York. Originally written by Charles E. Calhoun and made famous by Big Joe Turner in 1954, the song became one of the pivotal tunes that bridged rhythm and blues with early rock and roll. Turner’s version was already well-loved, reaching audiences through its infectious beat and bold lyrics, but Presley’s rendition added his unique style, further popularizing the track among rock and roll fans of the late 1950s.

Unlike Turner’s version, which had an edgier, blues-oriented feel, Elvis’s interpretation brought in a lighter, more rock-driven energy, aided by his bandmates Scotty Moore on guitar, Bill Black on bass, and D.J. Fontana on drums. Presley’s take on “Shake, Rattle and Roll” was later released as part of his album For LP Fans Only in 1959. Though it wasn’t released as a standalone single initially, the song showcased Elvis’s ability to adapt R&B songs for a rock-and-roll audience, reinforcing his role in popularizing the genre’s crossover appeal.

Presley’s style and phrasing transformed the song, blending his rockabilly edge with traditional blues structures, making it a staple in his live performances and recordings. Elvis’s version captures the high energy and rebellion that characterized rock and roll’s early days, symbolizing his impact on shaping the genre.

Lyrics:

“Shake, Rattle And Roll”

Well get out of that bed, wash your face and hands
Get out of that bed, wash your face and hands
Well get in that kitchen
Make some noise with the pots and pans
I believe it to my soul you’re the devil in nylon hose
I believe it to my soul you’re the devil in nylon hose
For the harder I work the faster my money goesWell I said shake, rattle and roll
I said shake rattle and roll
I said shake, rattle and roll
I said shake rattle and roll
Well you won’t do right
To save your doggone soul

Shake rattle and roll

I’m like the one-eyed cat peeping in a seafood store
I’m like the one-eyed cat peeping in a seafood store
Well I can look at you tell you ain’t no child no more
I believe you’re doing me wrong and now I know
I believe you’re doing me wrong and now I know
‘Cause the harder I work the faster my money goes

Well I said shake, rattle and roll
I said shake rattle and roll
I said shake, rattle and roll
I said shake rattle and roll
Well you won’t do right
To save your doggone soul

Play it again!

I went over the hill, way down underneath
I went over the hill, way down underneath
You make me roll my eyes
And then you make me grit my teeth

Well I said shake, rattle and roll
I said shake rattle and roll
I said shake, rattle and roll
I said shake rattle and roll
Well you won’t do right
To save your doggone soul
