Elvis Presley’s rendition of “O Come, All Ye Faithful” is a notable track from his 1971 album, Elvis Sings The Wonderful World of Christmas. This album marked Presley’s fifteenth studio release and his second dedicated Christmas collection, following his 1957 Elvis’ Christmas Album. The recording sessions took place in May 1971 at RCA Studio B in Nashville, Tennessee, with the album officially released on October 20, 1971.

“O Come, All Ye Faithful” is a traditional Christmas carol, also known by its Latin title “Adeste Fideles”. The hymn’s origins date back to the 18th century, with its authorship attributed to various individuals, including John Francis Wade. Over the centuries, it has become a staple in Christmas music repertoires worldwide.

In Presley’s arrangement, he collaborated with a group of accomplished musicians. The recording featured James Burton and Chip Young on guitars, Norbert Putnam on bass, David Briggs on piano, and Glen Spreen on organ. The rhythm section included drummers Jerry Carrigan and Kenneth Buttrey, while Charlie McCoy contributed on organ, harmonica, and percussion. Backing vocals were provided by The Imperials Quartet and soprano Millie Kirkham, adding depth and harmony to the track.

Musically, the album blends genres such as Christmas, pop, and rock and roll, reflecting Presley’s versatility and ability to infuse traditional songs with his unique style. His rendition of “O Come, All Ye Faithful” maintains the song’s reverent tone while incorporating elements characteristic of his musical approach.

Upon its release, Elvis Sings The Wonderful World of Christmas achieved significant commercial success. The album topped the Billboard Christmas Albums chart in 1971. Although holiday albums were not eligible for the main Billboard Top LPs chart between 1963 and 1973, the album’s popularity was evident. It was certified Gold on November 4, 1977, Platinum on December 1, 1977, double Platinum on May 20, 1988, and triple Platinum on July 15, 1999, by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA).
