Introduction:

While not one of his biggest hits, True Love, released in 1957, offers a glimpse into a different side of the young Elvis Presley. Recorded during a session for the movie Loving You, the song showcases Presley’s versatility as a singer.

True Love is a soulful ballad, a clear departure from the high-energy rock and roll that launched Presley to superstardom. The song’s composer, Sherman Edwards, was a behind-the-scenes musician who frequently collaborated with Sun Studio owner Sam Phillips. Edwards, along with Presley, co-wrote many of the Sun recordings that propelled Presley into the spotlight. However, True Love wasn’t recorded at Sun. By 1 957, Presley had moved on to RCA Records, and the sessions for Loving You took place at Radio Recorders in Hollywood. Despite the change in scenery, True Love retains the raw emotion and intimate feel of Presley’s Sun recordings.

True Love was not included in the original Loving You film. However, it was added to the soundtrack album released alongside the movie. RCA, Presley’s record label at the time, frequently used this practice to bolster the length of soundtrack albums. While not a commercial smash hit, True Love found a dedicated audience among Presley’s fans. The song’s sincere lyrics about devotion and commitment resonated with many listeners. Presley’s powerful vocals deliver the emotional weight of the song, demonstrating his ability to captivate an audience with a ballad just as effectively as with his high-octane rock and roll.

True Love holds a special place in the Presley Presley catalog. It serves as a reminder that the “King of Rock and Roll” wasn’t confined to one genre. He could deliver soulful ballads with the same intensity and charisma that he brought to his rockers. True Love may not have topped the charts, but it continues to be a cherished part of Presley’s musical legacy, showcasing his vocal talents and emotional range.

Lyrics:

“True Love”
(from “Loving You” soundtrack)

Suntanned, windblown, honeymooners at last alone
Feeling far above par, oh how lucky we are
While I give to you and you give to me
True love, true love
So, on and on it will always be
True love, true love
For you and I have a guardian angel on high
With nothing to do but to give to you
And to give to me love forever true
