Introduction:

Kiss Me Quick, a Rock and Roll song recorded by the King of Rock and Roll himself, Elvis Presley, was released in 1962 as part of the compilation album Pot Luck with Elvis. While not originally a single in the United States, it did find release as a single in the United Kingdom in 1962 and achieved chart success there.

Kiss Me Quick wasn’t produced by Elvis’s longtime collaborator, Sam Phillips, but rather by Steve Sholes. Sholes, who began working with RCA in 1954, became a prominent record producer for the label, working with artists like Don Robertson and Chet Atkins. Elvis Presley would record numerous tracks with Sholes throughout the 1960s, including “Return to Sender” and “Little Sister.”

Kiss Me Quick wasn’t a major hit for Presley upon its initial release in the US, but it found new life across the Atlantic. Released as a single in the UK in December of 1962, the song reached number one on the British charts and stayed there for an impressive eight weeks in 1963. This success likely prompted the single release in the US in 1964.

Interestingly, the song garnered a bit of controversy when it was reviewed by The Beatles on the BBC-TV program Juke Box Jury in December of 1963. John Lennon, while not a fan of the song itself, predicted it would be a hit because of Elvis’s star power. The other Beatles were less kind, offering negative remarks about the song. Despite this, Kiss Me Quick continues to be a fan favorite , particularly enjoyed for its upbeat tempo and playful lyrics.

Even though it wasn’t a chart-topper in the US, Kiss Me Quick holds a place in Elvis Presley’s discography as a song that achieved surprising success overseas. It also stands as a reminder of Presley’s global influence and the enduring popularity he held throughout his career.
