Introduction:

“Blue Moon of Kentucky” is a seminal song in the history of both bluegrass and rock ‘n’ roll. Originally written and recorded by Bill Monroe in 1946, it was a slow, 3/4-time waltz that became an anthem for bluegrass music. Monroe, widely considered the “Father of Bluegrass,” composed the song as a tribute to his home state of Kentucky, and it became one of his most iconic works, though it wasn’t initially a major commercial success.

Elvis Presley famously reinvented the song in 1954 while recording at Sun Studio in Memphis. He, along with guitarist Scotty Moore and bassist Bill Black, transformed the original bluegrass waltz into an upbeat, rockabilly track. This change came about when producer Sam Phillips needed a B-side for Elvis’ first single, “That’s All Right.” The trio’s reworking of the song into a 4/4-time rhythm gave it a lively, modern feel, contrasting sharply with Monroe’s original version.

Elvis’ rendition of “Blue Moon of Kentucky” was well-received, especially after he performed it on the “Louisiana Hayride.” Monroe himself, initially hesitant, eventually praised the new version, and even re-recorded the song in Elvis’ style. Elvis’ success with this track played a key role in his rise to fame, marking the beginning of his pioneering role in the creation of rock ‘n’ roll.

Lyrics:

“Blue Moon Of Kentucky”

Blue moon, blue moon, blue moon,
keep shining bright.
Blue moon, keep on shining bright,
You’re gonna bring me back my baby tonight,
Blue moon, keep shining bright.

I said blue moon of Kentucky
keep on shining,
Shine on the one that’s gone and left me blue.
I said blue moon of Kentucky
keep on shining,
Shine on the one that’s gone and left me blue.

Well, it was on one moonlight night,
Stars shining bright,
Wish blown high
Love said good-bye.

Blue moon of Kentucky
Keep on shining.
Shine on the one that’s gone and left me blue.

Well, I said blue moon of Kentucky
Just keep on shining.
Shine on the one that’s gone and left me blue.
I said blue moon of Kentucky
keep on shining.
Shine on the one that’s gone and left me blue.

Well, it was on one moonlight night,
Stars shining bright,
Wish blown high
Love said good-bye.

Blue moon of Kentucky
Keep on shining.
Shine on the one that’s gone and left me blue.
