Introduction:

While Elvis Presley’s iconic ballad Love Me Tender is most associated with its original 1956 release, the song’s legacy extends far beyond that initial appearance. Even in 1970, fourteen years after its debut, Love Me Tender proved its enduring power when Presley re-recorded it for his live album On Stage. This new rendition not only resonated with audiences but also solidified the song’s place as a timeless classic in Presley’s repertoire.

The original 1956 version of Love Me Tender was born out of a unique collaboration. The song served as the title track for Presley’s film debut of the same name. While Presley wasn’t initially sold on the ballad, Love Me Tender was written by songwriter Ken Darby and adapted from the Civil War era folk song Aura Lee. Producer RCA Studio A team oversee the recording, which featured Presley’s smooth vocals alongside a melancholic orchestral arrangement. Despite Presley’s reservations, Love Me Tender became a massive hit, topping the Billboard charts and further propelling the young singer to superstardom. The controversy surrounding the edited lyrics for the film (the original version included the word “damn”) only fueled the song’s popularity.

Fast forward to 1970. Presley, now a seasoned performer had embarked on his highly successful Las Vegas residency. During this era, he frequently incorporated medleys of his greatest hits into his live shows. For the On Stage live album, a recording of Love Me Tender from one of these Las Vegas performances was chosen. This 1970 version showcased Presley’s matured voice and the evolution of his performance style. The live rendition brought a renewed energy to the ballad, replacing the original’s orchestral backing with a more stripped-down band accompaniment.

The 1970 version of Love Me Tender was a hit in its own right. While it didn’t replicate the chart-topping success of the original, it peaked at No. 50 on the Billboard Hot 100 and remained on the charts for a respectable 14 weeks. More importantly, it demonstrated the song’s versatility and its ability to connect with audiences across different eras.

Love Me Tender’s enduring legacy is a testament to both Presley’s unmatched charisma and the song’s inherent quality. The ballad’s simple yet evocative lyrics and its versatile melody have ensured its place not only as a cornerstone of Presley’s discography but also as a beloved classic in the vast landscape of American popular music.

Lyrics:

“Love Me Tender”
(from “Elvis (NBC TV Special)” soundtrack)

Love me tender,
love me sweet,
never let me go.
You have made my life complete,
and I love you so.

Love me tender,
love me true,
all my dreams fulfilled.
For my darlin’ I love you,
and I always will.

Love me tender,
love me long,
take me to your heart.
For it’s there that I belong,
and we’ll never part.

Love me tender,
love me dear,
tell me you are mine.
I’ll be yours through all the years,
till the end of time.

(When at last my dreams come true
Darling this I know
Happiness will follow you
Everywhere you go).
