Introduction:

Released in 1964, Suspicion stands out as a rock and roll ballad in the vast catalog of the King of Rock and Roll, Elvis Presley. While Presley is known for his high-energy performances and driving rockabilly rhythms, Suspicion takes a more introspective approach, showcasing a vulnerability not often seen in his music.

The song’s origins lie with songwriting trio Doc Pomus, Mort Shuman, and Brock Coburn. Doc Pomus, a prolific songwriter known for crafting R&B and rock and roll tunes, teamed up with lyricist Mort Shuman and newcomer Brock Coburn to pen the introspective lyrics. Presley’s regular producer, Steve Sholes, oversaw the recording sessions, which took place at Radio Recorders in Hollywood, California.

Suspicion quickly garnered success, reaching number one on the Billboard Bubbling Under Hot 100 chart. The Bubbling Under chart served as an extension of the Billboard Hot 100, listing songs that had not yet cracked the prestigious top 100 but were receiving significant sales and radio play. This achievement indicated the song’s popularity despite not reaching the very top of the charts.

Suspicion’s ballad style marked a departure from Presley’s usual energetic persona. The song features a slower tempo and a more subdued instrumental arrangement, with a prominent focus on Presley’s vocals. The lyrics explore themes of doubt and insecurity in a relationship. The narrator, presumably Presley himself, expresses his love for his partner but remains unconvinced of their reciprocation. Lines like “Every time you kiss me I’m still not certain that you love me, every time you hold me I’m still not certain that you care” exemplify this internal conflict.

Suspicion’s release in 1964 fell within a period of significant change for Presley’s career. His initial burst of rock and roll superstardom in the late 1950s had begun to wane, and he was venturing more into film soundtracks and ballads. Suspicion demonstrates Presley’s ability to excel in a genre outside his usual wheelhouse. The song’s success, despite its difference from his most famous works, signifies his adaptability and enduring popularity.

Lyrics:

Every time you kiss me, I’m still not certain that you love meEvery time you hold me, I’m still not certain that you careThough you keep on saying you really, really, really love meDo you speak the same words to someone else when I’m not there
Suspicion torments my heartSuspicion keeps us apartSuspicion why torture me
Every time you call me and tell me we should meet tomorrowI can’t help but think that you’re meeting someone else tonightWhy should our romance just keep on causing me such sorrowWhy am I so doubtful whenever you are out of sight
Suspicion torments my heartSuspicion keeps us apartSuspicion why torture me
Darling, if you love me, I beg you wait a little longerWait until I drive all these foolish fears out of my mindHow I hope and pray that our love will keep on growing strongerMaybe I’m suspicious ’cause true love is so hard to find
Suspicion torments my heartSuspicion keeps us apartSuspicion why torture me
