Introduction:

“He Touched Me” is a gospel song penned by Bill Gaither in 1963. The inspiration for the song emerged during Gaither’s collaboration with Dr. Dale Oldham on evangelistic crusades. Dr. Oldham remarked on the significance of the word “touch” in the New Testament, particularly in accounts of Jesus healing and transforming lives through touch, and suggested that Gaither compose a song celebrating this theme. Motivated by this idea, Gaither wrote “He Touched Me,” which was first performed by Dr. Oldham’s son, Doug Oldham, during their revival meetings. Doug Oldham was also the first to record the song in 1964, followed by the Bill Gaither Trio.

The song gained further prominence when Elvis Presley recorded it on May 18, 1971, at RCA’s Studio B in Nashville. Presley was accompanied by vocalists including The Imperials, Millie Kirkham, Ginger Holladay, and Temple Riser. Released as a single on February 29, 1972, with “Bosom of Abraham” as the B-side, it also became the title track of his gospel album “He Touched Me,” released in April 1972. This album marked Presley’s third and final studio gospel album, following “His Hand in Mine” (1960) and “How Great Thou Art” (1967). Notably, “He Touched Me” earned Presley his second Grammy Award for Best Inspirational Performance.

Presley’s rendition of “He Touched Me” played a significant role in popularizing the song, introducing it to a broader audience and reaffirming his deep connection to gospel music. The album “He Touched Me” was certified Gold on March 27, 1992, and Platinum on July 15, 1999, by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA), underscoring its enduring impact.

The song has been covered by numerous artists over the years, reflecting its lasting influence in gospel and contemporary Christian music. Its origins, tied to the meaningful concept of divine touch, continue to resonate with listeners, embodying a message of spiritual transformation and healing.
