Introduction:

“I Love You Because” is one of Elvis Presley’s earliest recordings, highlighting his blend of country and rhythm-and-blues influences. Written by Leon Payne in 1949, the song was first popularized by Payne himself and later became a country standard, recorded by several artists. Elvis recorded his version on July 5, 1954, at Sun Studio in Memphis during his groundbreaking sessions with producer Sam Phillips. This session also produced the iconic “That’s All Right,” marking the beginning of Elvis’ career as a revolutionary figure in music.

The track features Elvis on vocals and rhythm guitar, with Scotty Moore on lead guitar and Bill Black on bass. The relaxed tempo and heartfelt lyrics showcase a softer side of Elvis’ artistry, contrasting with his more upbeat rockabilly tracks from the same era. Initially included in his early repertoire to emphasize his versatility, the recording was later featured on compilations such as The King of Rock ‘n’ Roll: The Complete 50’s Masters.

Although not released as a single during his lifetime, “I Love You Because” became a beloved deep cut, celebrated for its earnest emotion and simplicity. Its release as part of RCA’s 1956 campaign to repackage his Sun recordings solidified its place in Elvis’ catalog, contributing to his enduring legacy as a genre-crossing artist.

Lyrics:

“I Love You Because”

I love you because you understand dear
Every single thing I try to do.
You’re always there to lend a helping hand, dear.
I love you most of all because you’re you.

No matter what the world may say about me,
I know your love will always see me through.
I love you for the way you never doubt me.
But most of all I love you ’cause you’re you.

I love you because, because my heart is ligther
honey everytime, everytime I’m walking by your side
and I love you, yes I love you because the future is a little bit brighter
and the door, the door of my happiness, you open wide

No matter what may be the style or season,
I know your heart will always be true.
I love you for a hundred thousand reasons,
But most of all I love you ’cause you’re you.
