Elvis Presley recorded his rendition of “I Will Be Home Again” on April 3, 1960, at RCA’s Studio B in Nashville. This session was part of his efforts to produce new material following his return from military service. The recording featured notable musicians, including guitarists Hank Garland and Scotty Moore, bassist Bob Moore, drummers D.J. Fontana and Buddy Harman, pianist Floyd Cramer, and saxophonist Boots Randolph. The Jordanaires provided backing vocals, with harmony vocals contributed by Charlie Hodge, an army friend of Presley’s.

Presley’s version of “I Will Be Home Again” was included on his album “Elvis Is Back!”, released on April 8, 1960. This album marked his return to the music scene after his military service and showcased a diverse range of musical styles, from rock and roll to rhythm and blues. The inclusion of “I Will Be Home Again” added a reflective and heartfelt touch to the album’s eclectic mix.

The song holds particular significance as it was the first instance where Charlie Hodge sang harmony with Elvis on a recording. Hodge, who had become close friends with Presley during their time in the army, played a supportive role in Presley’s post-army musical endeavors. Their collaboration on this track exemplifies the camaraderie and mutual respect between the two musicians.

“I Will Be Home Again” reflects the themes of longing and the anticipation of reunion, resonating with the sentiments of many during the post-war era. Presley’s emotive rendition, complemented by Hodge’s harmonious accompaniment, captures the essence of the song’s message. The track contributes to the depth and variety of “Elvis Is Back!”, an album that played a pivotal role in re-establishing Presley’s career in the 1960s.

Over the years, “I Will Be Home Again” has been appreciated for its simplicity and emotional depth, standing as a testament to Presley’s versatility as an artist and his ability to convey profound emotion through his music.
